Geiss, Frederick John C.P.

Frederick Geiss was born in 1876 and a Cincinnati native.

He served as a Coal Passer aboard the U.S.S. Bennington (PG-4) on July 21, 1905 while it was docked in San Diego. Below deck after having finished coaling the ship in preparation to sail to the aid of a disabled monitor. Excessive steam pressure caused a boiler explosion and sprayed scolding steam through the ship’s living compartment. He was one of 66 crew members killed in one of the Navy’s worst peacetime disasters.

He was 28-29 years old at the time of his passing.

Frederick Geiss is buried in the Bennington Memorial Section on July 23, 1905.
