Bert Arthur Hughes was born in Clarksville, Arkansas and served as an Ordinary Seaman on the U.S.S. Bennington. He was one of 66 crew members killed in one of the Navy’s worst peacetime disasters, when the U.S.S. Bennington boiler exploded on July 21, 1905. Bert Hughes was 19 years old when he died.
He is buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego in plot BM, 30.
